Lagos State Bids to Host 2026 National Youth Games

Lagos State has submitted its bid to host the 2026 National Youth Games, showcasing strong intent.

Officials say the city’s sports strength and readiness give it a clear advantage.

Lagos State has officially submitted a bid to host the 2026 edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), reinforcing its aspiration to become a central hub for national sports development and youth engagement in Nigeria.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed the expression of interest, signaling the state government’s firm commitment to youth empowerment through sports. The proposal highlights Lagos as a strategic location with the infrastructure, experience, and ambition to stage a successful edition of the multi-sport youth competition.

A statement released by the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) emphasized the state’s leadership in the sports and entertainment sectors, noting that Lagos remains Nigeria’s economic and cultural heartbeat.

“Lagos State remains committed to nurturing sports talent and fostering national unity through sporting excellence,” the statement read. “With world-class venues like Teslim Balogun Stadium, Mobolaji Johnson Arena, and Rowe Park, along with efficient transport systems and top-tier hospitality infrastructure, we are fully prepared to host the nation’s finest young athletes.”

The bid was presented by a delegation led by Hon. Lekan Fatodu, Director General of LSSC. Other key officials included Mr. Nunayon Olumide Travis (Director of Sports), Dr. (Mrs.) Oluyomi Oluwasanmi (Director of School Sports), and Mr. Dare Orimoloye (Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports).

Lagos has previously hosted several high-profile events, including national football tournaments and international athletics meets, positioning it as a strong contender for the NYG.

The National Youth Games, inaugurated to identify and groom emerging talents, serve as a breeding ground for Nigeria’s future sports stars. It has grown in significance over the years, offering a competitive yet developmental platform for athletes aged 15 and below.

At the most recent edition in 2024, Team Delta finished top of the medals table with 111 medals, 46 gold, 31 silver, and 34 bronze at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

Should Lagos secure the hosting rights for 2026, the state is expected to set a new benchmark in youth sports events by leveraging its logistical strength, infrastructure, and long-standing reputation for delivering impactful sporting programs.
