A member of the House of Representatives, Clara Nnabuife, has raised concern about the recent violent attack in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, which led to the death of at least 10 residents of Ebonyi State origin.
Speaking to reporters at the National Assembly complex on Thursday, Nnabuife, who represents the Orumba North/South Federal Constituency, described the killings as deeply tragic and an assault on human dignity.
The victims, all members of the Ebonyi Union living in Ogboji, were said to have been gunned down during a regular meeting of their association. Early reports indicate that the attack was linked to an internal leadership dispute within the union, and not a clash between the Ebonyi group and the host community.
“I strongly condemn this barbaric act,” Nnabuife stated. “No Nigerian should be subjected to such cruelty. This senseless loss of life is a violation of our collective humanity and must not be allowed to stand.”
She clarified that the crisis was purely an internal matter among Ebonyi indigenes who have long lived peacefully in Ogboji, adding that there is no history of conflict between the community and the Ebonyi settlers.
According to her, reliable testimonies from community leaders, security officials, and witnesses point to the violence erupting after a split within the union. A faction allegedly made away with financial documents, cash, and the group’s minute book earlier in the year, fueling tensions that escalated in March 2025.
One of the deceased, who was reportedly leading the breakaway faction and acting as the union’s chairman, had previously filed a police report about the internal conflict further confirming that the dispute was not ethnically driven.
Following the tragic incident, the Ogboji Town Union, local security groups, and concerned residents worked swiftly to restore order, support the wounded, and assist in funeral arrangements for the victims.
Nnabuife praised the Ebonyi residents of Ogboji for maintaining calm in the face of such trauma. “Their courage and self-control in the aftermath of this horrific event reflect the strength and unity of our communities,” she said.
She called on the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, and the state governments of Anambra and Ebonyi to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are prosecuted.
“Under no circumstances should acts of impunity be tolerated in a democratic society,” the lawmaker declared.
She also appealed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration to provide emergency support to the affected families through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.
In her closing remarks, Nnabuife cautioned the media and members of the public against spreading misinformation or distorting the facts surrounding the attack.
“This is a time for compassion, truth, and solidarity not divisive narratives or sensationalism,” she advised.
