EFCC Accused of Illegal Arrest Attempt at Gwarimpa Eatery, Video Surfaces Online

A viral video shows EFCC operatives confronting civilians at a Gwarimpa eatery in Abuja.

The incident raised questions about the agency’s methods and conduct during public operations.

A video currently circulating on social media has triggered public outrage over what appears to be an attempted illegal arrest by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at a popular eatery located along 4th Avenue in Gwarimpa, Abuja.

The incident, which reportedly occurred at Tastier Eatery, involved at least one EFCC officer confronting a group of civilians in a manner that has been described as aggressive and unprofessional by viewers of the footage.

In the video, a visibly agitated young man, whose identity remains unknown, questioned the basis for the attempted arrest.

“There was no call that I’m wanted by the EFCC or anything… Was I running from you that you say me or say us?” he asked. “Because I don’t know what exactly. It’s me… all of them? Do you know them? Do you know me?”

The EFCC officer, dressed in a plain outfit but claiming to be an operative of the agency, responded curtly:

“Sir, I am an officer. You are talking to an officer of the law. You better be careful.”

The young man, however, did not back down, demanding to know why he and others at the scene were being harassed.

“Scared of what? Who told you I’m scared? I’m not scared of you,” he fired back. “Why would you just come to a public place and tell us to follow you to your office, for what? I’m not going, that’s what I said. For what? We look like Yahoo boys, abi wetin?”

The officer then claimed he had received a call earlier in the day that prompted the operation.

“That is why I listened to this Oga… A man called me by 7 o’clock, let’s listen to it,” he said, attempting to justify the intervention without providing further details or showing any official documentation.

The EFCC has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, public commentators have questioned the legality and professionalism of the agency’s methods, especially in civilian spaces like eateries.
