NNPC Donates 35 Hybrid CNG Buses to Support Federal Government’s Clean Energy Push
NNPC donates 35 hybrid CNG buses to federal clean energy initiative, boosting gas-powered transport.
Officials say the move will reduce costs, emissions, and support Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has formally handed over 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), marking a significant step in the federal government’s clean energy drive.

The handover ceremony, held in Abuja, was led by NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, who reaffirmed the company’s strong commitment to Nigeria’s transition to gas-powered transportation. According to Ojulari, the initiative aligns with NNPC Ltd’s strategic push to promote CNG as a cleaner, more cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional fuels.
“We are proud to champion this pivotal transition. NNPC Ltd remains dedicated to advancing the government’s gas utilization objectives, and this contribution underscores our broader achievements in gas supply, infrastructure development, and retail expansion,” Ojulari said.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the deployment of CNG buses as a multifaceted intervention. He emphasized that the initiative goes beyond environmental benefits, offering real economic and social value to Nigerians.
“These are not just buses they are tools for economic relief and social equity. They point to a future where the average Nigerian enjoys safe, affordable, and efficient transportation,” Ekpo noted.
The minister highlighted the program as a key element of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at reducing transport costs, cutting dependence on petrol, and harnessing the nation’s abundant natural gas resources for public benefit.
In his remarks, NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President of Downstream, Mr. Mumuni Dagazau, outlined the broader economic implications of shifting to CNG. He noted that the adoption of gas as an alternative fuel source will reduce the country’s reliance on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), generate cost savings, and stimulate growth in Nigeria’s domestic gas sector.
Adding to the conversation, the Executive Vice President of Gas, Power & New Energy affirmed that NNPC Ltd is fully committed to leading the nationwide push for CNG commercialization, stressing the company’s readiness to support the initiative at every stage of its implementation.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, described the move as a reflection of the company’s long-term vision for a sustainable energy future.
“Through this initiative, we are not only delivering cleaner energy solutions but also empowering communities and safeguarding the environment for future generations,” she said.
