The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, will be among six distinguished Nigerians to be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees at the inaugural convocation ceremony of the Federal University Gashua (FUG) in Yobe State, scheduled for Saturday, July 10, 2025.
This was announced by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Maimuna Waziri, during a press briefing ahead of the historic event. According to her, the honorary degrees are being awarded in recognition of the recipient’s outstanding contributions to national development, leadership, and public service.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu will be awarded the Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) degree, a recognition of her public advocacy, legislative work, and social impact initiatives as both a senator and First Lady.
Also to be honored is Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, who will receive a Doctor of Public Administration (DPA), acknowledging his contributions to state governance and national political coordination. Minister of Police Affairs and former Yobe Governor Ibrahim Geidam will also be conferred with a DPA.
Senator Ahmed Lawan, the immediate past President of the Nigerian Senate, will receive a Doctor of Science (D.Sc), while Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad will also be awarded a Doctor of Letters (D.Litt). Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji, a former Head of Civil Service of the Federation, will join the list of honorees with a DPA as well.
Prof. Waziri highlighted the university’s strides since its establishment, noting that 3,449 students have graduated across six sets in the faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Management and Social Sciences, and Science. The upcoming convocation marks a significant milestone for the institution, both in terms of academic growth and national visibility.
She described the ceremony as not just a celebration of academic excellence but a moment of national recognition for individuals whose lives and work have had a lasting impact on governance, education, law, and public service.
The event is expected to draw high-profile guests from across the country, including policymakers, academics, and traditional rulers.
The recognition of public figures with honorary degrees has gained momentum across Nigerian universities. Recently, Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, representing Bichi Federal Constituency, was conferred an honorary doctorate by the Federal University Dutsin-Ma in Katsina. The Arewa Good Governance Coalition (AGGC) praised Bichi for his efforts in driving legislative progress and infrastructure development, citing his support for the creation of institutions such as the proposed University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Bichi.
Likewise, Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and industrialist, has received multiple honorary degrees from global universities in recognition of his impact on business and philanthropy. Findings show that at least seven reputable institutions have bestowed such honors on Dangote, affirming his status as a leading force in African development.
