Actress Chinyere Wilfred Blames Gen Z Parenting For Rise in Broken Marriages
Actress Chinyere Wilfred blames Gen Z parenting and lost values for rising marriage breakdowns.
She urges mothers to listen more, drawing lessons from her role in ‘Sands of Time‘.
Veteran Nollywood actress Chinyere Wilfred has shared her thoughts on modern parenting and marital instability among young people, says Gen Z parenting and lost values are behind the rise of broken marriages and family issues in today’s society.

In a recent interview with The Nation, Wilfred voiced concern over how quickly marriages now fall apart. Speaking from personal experience and her recent role in the TV drama Sands of Time, the actress reflected on how traditional values have shifted in today’s society.
“Parents of this generation are Gen Z parents,” she said. “Back in the day, our parents wouldn’t do most of the things we see today.
“Look at what is happening to marriages now, you buy aso ebi and before you blink, they’ve broken up. We were not like that before. I’ve been married for over 30 years and I’m still happily married.”
Wilfred, who plays Mama Bomboy in Sands of Time, said the role helped her reflect on her own parenting style. The character is portrayed as a firm African mother, a role that brought up real-life emotions for the actress.
“While shooting, I saw myself in that character. I realized I was overreacting with my children. During the act, I didn’t notice it, but while watching the playback, I saw my faults,” she shared.
“When I got home, I calmed down with my son, I won’t lie. Even now, at this time they say Gen Z this and that, he still can’t sleep out even though he is a graduate. I thought I was protecting them, but I was overprotecting them.”
Wilfred believes that the series delivers a timely lesson, especially for mothers who may confuse strictness with love.
“The series will teach mothers to listen more and loosen up,” she said.
