Aisha Buhari Says Her Husband Asked Nigerians for Forgiveness
Aisha Buhari says late husband asked Nigerians for forgiveness before his death as final wish.
She recalls his reflection on leadership, admitting he knew he made both good and bad choices.
Aisha Buhari, wife of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has disclosed that her husband left behind a personal message for the Nigerian people one rooted in humility and reflection. According to her, the former leader had repeatedly told her, even after leaving office, that he desired one thing if he passed away before her: to ask Nigerians to forgive him.

Speaking with emotion, Mrs. Buhari said, “Ever since he left office, he often reminded me that if he died before me, I should kindly ask Nigerians to forgive him for any wrongs he might have committed during his time in power.”
She noted that Buhari was aware of the complexities and pressures that came with leading a nation like Nigeria and was conscious of the fact that not every decision made during his administration would have pleased everyone. “He always told me that he was only human capable of doing good, but also capable of making mistakes,” she added.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 after ruling as a military head of state in the 1980s, remained a polarizing figure. While some praised his anti-corruption drive and infrastructural efforts, others criticized his government for issues ranging from human rights concerns to economic hardship and rising insecurity.
Now, as preparations are being made for his final burial rites, his widow’s words offer a rare, personal glimpse into how the late president viewed his legacy. “That’s why I’m here today,” Aisha Buhari said solemnly, “begging all Nigerians to please forgive him before he is finally laid to rest.”
