Federal Government Declares July 15 Public Holiday to Honor Late President Buhari

The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to pay tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday.

This holiday forms part of a broader national mourning period of seven days, which was earlier announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Buhari’s honor.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Interior, Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, said the day was set aside to respect the former leader’s contributions to Nigeria.

According to the minister, “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

He encouraged Nigerians to observe the day by fostering peace, unity, and patriotism, values the late president consistently promoted during his time in office.

“As earlier announced, the national flags are to fly at half-mast for the seven-day mourning period from Sunday, 13th July, 2025,” the statement said.

The Federal Government also extended its sympathy to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and the entire country, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
