National Assembly Halts Plenary Till 22 July to Honor Late President Buhari
National Assembly halts sittings until July 22 to honor late President Muhammadu Buhari’s legacy.
Leaders urge lawmakers to join tributes and burial plans for Nigeria’s former head of state.
The National Assembly has suspended all legislative proceedings until Tuesday, 22 July 2025, in honor of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, 13 July, in London.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana. According to the statement, the move was jointly agreed upon by the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives as a tribute to Buhari’s legacy and contributions to Nigeria.
“In honor of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities in the National Assembly are hereby suspended immediately until Tuesday, 22 July 2025,” the statement read.
Lawmakers have been urged to adjust their schedules to fully participate in the funeral arrangements for the late leader, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
In extending condolences, the leadership of both chambers expressed sympathy to the Nigerian government, the people of Katsina State, and the Buhari family, including his wife and children.
“The leadership of both Chambers, on behalf of members and staff of the National Assembly, extends heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the government and people of Katsina State; his wife, children, and the entire Buhari family,” the statement continued.
Buhari will be remembered, the statement added, “for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity.”
The Clerk also offered prayers for Buhari’s peaceful repose, saying, “May Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”
President Buhari’s death marks a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history. A retired Major General, he first led Nigeria as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 after seizing power in a coup. Decades later, after several electoral attempts, he returned to power through democratic elections in 2015 and served two terms.
