Princess Eugenia of Hanover Speaks on Challenges of Royal Life

Princess Eugenia of Hanover says her royal background brought more criticism than privilege in school.

Now studying medicine in Vienna, she prefers a stable life over distractions like full-time fashion work.

Princess Eugenia of Hanover has opened up about the less glamorous side of being born into royalty.

The 23-year-old German royal, who currently lives in Vienna, shared that her royal background often brought her more trouble than privilege, especially during her school years.

“In school, I had some teachers that just didn’t like me because of it, and they also said some comments which were not very nice or reasonable,” she said in a recent interview.

Eugenia is the daughter of Prince Heinrich of Hanover and Princess Thyra von Westernhagen, and her family ties extend to the Monegasque royal family through her uncle Prince Ernst, who is married to Princess Caroline of Monaco. Still, despite her royal lineage, she says the title holds no real value in her everyday life.

“In Germany, it is just a name and it actually doesn’t mean anything anymore. For me, it doesn’t mean anything because I don’t see myself as something different to others.”

Growing up, Eugenia admits she wasn’t particularly fond of school and preferred being around her horses. However, she chose to pursue higher education and is currently studying medicine at a well-respected university in Vienna. She’s following the path of her grandfather, Prince Ernest Augustus, who became a professor of ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) medicine.

Alongside her studies, Eugenia has explored modeling, a path that made her parents nervous at first.

“They were apprehensive, but my mom came with me to shoots, a bit scared, and then she saw it was all fine,” she recalled.

Now focused on her future, Eugenia says she’s committed to finishing her medical degree, and she’s not willing to let anything distract her from that goal.

“Right now I’m very happy about my life. It’s very stable. I think if I only did fashion, then that could mess it up. I only have two more years to be a general doctor. There’s no point leaving now.”
