TikTok removes 3.6 million Nigerian videos in Q1 2025 for violating content rules, up 50 percent.
Platform cites improved detection tools, cracks down on fake engagement and covert influence efforts.
Popular video-sharing platform TikTok says it removed more than 3.6 million videos uploaded from Nigeria in the first quarter of 2025 for breaching its community guidelines.
The company made this known in its latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report for Q1 2025, which shows a significant jump in content takedowns from Nigeria compared to previous months. In the final quarter of 2024, TikTok removed 2.4 million videos from Nigerian users meaning the latest figure marks a 50% increase.
According to the report, TikTok’s systems identified and removed 98.4% of the flagged videos even before users reported them. The platform added that 92.1% of the violative content was taken down within 24 hours of being uploaded.
In addition to video removals, TikTok also cracked down on coordinated influence campaigns in March 2025. The company said it took down 129 accounts across West Africa that were found to be part of such covert operations.
Globally, TikTok removed over 211 million videos during the first quarter of the year a jump from the 153 million videos taken down in Q4 2024. Of these, more than 184 million were detected using the platform’s automated moderation tools. The report noted that TikTok’s worldwide proactive detection rate climbed to 99%, further highlighting the platform’s growing efficiency in identifying and removing harmful or inappropriate content.
TikTok also took steps to clean up fake engagement on its platform, deleting about 44.7 million comments created by fake accounts.
“We remain vigilant in our efforts to detect external threats and safeguard the platform from fake accounts and engagement,” the company said. “These threats persistently probe and attack our systems, leading to occasional fluctuations in the reported metrics within these areas. Despite this, we are steadfast in our commitment to promptly identify and remove any accounts, content, or activities that seek to artificially boost popularity on our platform.”
