Former Super Eagles Coach Monday Sinclair Dies at 88

Veteran coach Monday Sinclair, former Super Eagles interim boss, dies at 88 after diabetes battle.

He’s remembered for mentoring stars like Rufai, Taribo West, Finidi George, and Peterside Idah.

Veteran Nigerian football coach and former interim handler of the Super Eagles, Monday Sinclair, has passed away at the age of 88.

His death was announced by former Nigerian international goalkeeper Peterside Idah, who shared a heartfelt Facebook post on Wednesday. According to reports, Sinclair died around 3:15 p.m. after a prolonged battle with diabetes.

Confirming the news, Idah wrote:

“Our daddy is gone. What a man. He signed me to play for the Sharks. Gave me my first match against the Niger Tornadoes of Minna.”

Sinclair briefly managed the Nigerian national team in 1997 following the exit of Frenchman Philippe Troussier. Though his time in charge was short, he led the Super Eagles in two international friendlies against Zambia and Tunisia.

Beyond his stint with the national team, Sinclair made a lasting impact on Nigerian football through his work with domestic clubs and youth development. He is widely credited with identifying and nurturing several football talents who later became household names, including legendary goalkeeper Peter Rufai, defenders Taribo West and Finidi George, as well as Peterside Idah himself.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria’s football community in recognition of Sinclair’s contribution to the game. He is remembered not only for his technical skills on the sidelines but also for his mentorship and talent discovery, which helped shape the careers of many top players.

Sinclair’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian football, particularly for those who came through the ranks under his guidance.
