Zamfara Governor Disburses Over N328 Million to Support 8,225 Secondary School Girls

Governor Dauda Lawal has approved over ₦328 million to support girls’ education in Zamfara.

Over 8,000 secondary school girls received funds to help them stay in school.

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has disbursed more than N328 million in educational support to 8,225 secondary school girls across the state, as part of a broader initiative to promote girl-child education among vulnerable communities.

This was confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, who noted that the financial aid is targeted at girls from the poorest and most underserved households in all 14 local government areas of Zamfara.

Each beneficiary received N40,000 to cover expenses for the first academic term, with an additional N10,000 scheduled for both the second and third terms, totaling N60,000 for the whole school session.

“This intervention aims to remove the financial barriers preventing girls from completing secondary education,” the statement read. “Governor Lawal approved a total of N322 million for this first batch, and plans are already underway to support more girls in a second phase.”

The funding was facilitated through two significant projects: the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) and the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE). Both programs focus on enhancing educational access, promoting social inclusion, and fostering long-term resilience in rural and disadvantaged communities.

Governor Lawal’s administration has emphasized education as a cornerstone for sustainable development in Zamfara, a state where insecurity and poverty have significantly hindered school attendance, particularly for girls. The financial aid package is part of broader efforts to close the gender gap in education and ensure that more girls not only attend school but also remain there throughout their academic journey.
