Dangote Refinery Bringing Back N5 Fuel Discount for Key Partners
Dangote Refinery plans to reinstate its fuel discount after halting it over product diversion.
The N5 rebate will return soon under stricter rules to prevent abuse by rogue marketers.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced plans to bring back its N5 per liter fuel rebate for strategic partners, following a temporary suspension caused by alleged misconduct among some marketers.
Earlier on Friday, reports emerged that the refinery uncovered a fresh scheme in which some of its affiliate marketers and strategic partners were diverting the discounted petroleum products meant for retail at reduced prices. These actions violated the terms of the scheme and prompted the refinery to halt the discount arrangement on July 13, 2025.
The N5 rebate was initially introduced to support Dangote’s registered partners in maintaining competitive profits, especially amid stiff price competition from imported fuel. It also aimed to ensure nationwide access to Dangote’s locally refined petroleum products.
However, according to an internal letter signed by the Group Executive Director of Commercial Operations, Fatima Dangote, the company discovered that some dealers were reselling the discounted products directly from the refinery grounds at rates below the official gantry price, bypassing the retail chain entirely.
The diverted products were reportedly being sold at much higher market rates, defeating the purpose of the discount scheme and distorting pricing across the downstream sector.
“In our drive to ensure the distribution and retail sale of DPRP refined petroleum products across your service stations nationwide… we commenced the strategic partnership scheme… Unfortunately, we’ve received several complaints about partners selling products at the refinery below the official gantry price,” the letter read.
The company said the abuse threatened the sustainability of its operations and, as a result, management had no choice but to suspend the N5 discount. It also confirmed that a restructuring process is underway.
Despite the suspension, a senior official from the refinery, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the discount scheme will return soon in a more transparent and structured form.
“The partnership is still on. It’s just the N5 discount we suspended for now, but we are coming up with another one soon,” the official stated.
As of now, the full structure and rollout date for the revised scheme remain undisclosed, but refinery insiders say efforts are underway to prevent a repeat of the violations that led to the initial suspension.
