Edo Governor Okpebholo Warns Peter Obi Against Future Visits Without Permission
Governor Okpebholo warns Peter Obi over Edo visit, draws widespread condemnation.
The Edo leader says Obi must seek permission before entering the state, citing safety concerns.
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, cautioning him against entering Edo State without seeking prior approval.
The warning followed Obi’s recent visit to the state, where he reportedly donated ₦15 million to St. Philomena College of Nursing in Benin City. Governor Okpebholo, while addressing a gathering in Uromi, expressed displeasure over Obi’s unannounced trip, claiming it led to unrest in the area. He alleged that the visit triggered a crisis resulting in the deaths of three people, although no independent verification has been provided to support that claim.
“I’m saying it for the world to hear: Peter Obi should not enter Edo State again without informing me or getting permission. If he does, I can’t guarantee his safety. Whatever happens, he’ll be responsible,” Okpebholo declared.
The governor’s comments have since triggered widespread criticism across civil society and political spheres. Legal expert and human rights advocate, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, condemned the statement, describing it as dangerous and unacceptable. He noted that it sets a troubling precedent where a sitting governor attempts to regulate the movements of private citizens within a federated republic.
Similarly, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) denounced the governor’s remarks as unconstitutional and provocative. The group argued that every Nigerian has the right to move freely across the country without seeking permission from political leaders. It also described the threat as a “veiled death sentence” on the former presidential candidate and called on security agencies to ensure Obi’s safety.
