NMA Katsina Branch Rejects Government Circular on Salary Adjustments, Warns of Service Disruption

NMA Katsina condemned the Federal Government’s salary circular for medical professionals, calling it inadequate.

They demanded its withdrawal, warning that failure to address concerns could disrupt healthcare services.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Katsina State branch, has expressed deep disappointment and strong condemnation over a circular allegedly issued by the Federal Government concerning salary adjustments for medical and dental professionals in the country.

The NMA criticized the circular as “grossly inadequate, misleading, and a blatant breach of the agreements made during the collective bargaining process between the NMA and the Nigerian government.”

This statement was released in a communique following the association’s SEC meeting in Katsina on Saturday.

The circular, issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) on June 27, 2025, regarding the review of allowances for medical and dental officers in the Federal public service, was firmly rejected by the NMA Katsina branch. The group has demanded that the government withdraw the circular immediately and fulfill all outstanding demands.

The communique, which was signed by Dr. Muhammadu Sani, Chairman of the NMA Katsina, and Dr. Yahya Salisu, Secretary, also warned that failure to meet these demands could lead to a disruption of healthcare services.

The Katsina branch further emphasized that the healthcare sector is at a breaking point, primarily due to unfulfilled promises and inadequate welfare for doctors. The association urged the government to address the concerns outlined by the National Official Committee (NOC) on July 2, 2025.

In the statement, the NMA Katsina expressed profound dissatisfaction, calling the circular a violation of previous agreements and citing the ongoing challenges within the healthcare sector, including the impact of brain drain and burnout among medical professionals. The NMA stated that these issues, compounded by economic hardship and declining purchasing power, have left the medical workforce disillusioned.

“The government must honor its promises and improve the welfare of the doctors who continue to serve the nation despite these challenges,” the communique concluded. The NMA reaffirmed its full support for the NOC’s position and warned that the expiration of the 21-day grace period could lead to disruptions in health services.
