Abuja is alive with excitement as the 46th edition of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Tennis Championships officially begins today at the MKO Abiola Stadium, drawing some of the nation’s top talents to the court.

The annual tournament, one of the most prestigious events on Nigeria’s tennis calendar, kicked off its qualifiers on Friday, with the main draw set to run through July 26. Matches will be held at the tennis section of the stadium’s Package B complex.

According to the draw held on Sunday, today’s opening fixtures will feature men’s and women’s singles matches. The men’s category begins with the Round of 64, while the women’s event starts from the Round of 32. Doubles matches, including the wheelchair tennis category, will commence tomorrow from the Round of 16.

Among the high-profile players expected to compete for top honours are Sylvester Emmanuel, Imeh Joseph, Aanu Aiyegbusi, and Oyinlomo Quadri. Defending women’s singles champion Mary-Love Edwards will also return to the court, aiming to retain her title.

The tournament is not only a showcase of local athletic excellence but also a platform to foster the growth of tennis in Nigeria, according to the Central Bank.

Reaffirming the bank’s dedication to sports development, the acting Director of Corporate Communications at the CBN, Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, reiterated the apex bank’s long-standing commitment to nurturing local tennis talent through the annual championship.

Over 90 players are participating in this year’s edition, which continues to draw attention from fans, the media, and tennis stakeholders nationwide.
