Farooq Kperogi Apologizes to Aisha Buhari Over Divorce Claim
Farooq Kperogi apologizes to Aisha Buhari over false claim about her marriage to Buhari.
He admits his post caused pain and regrets sharing private information with the public.
US-based journalism professor, Farooq Kperogi, has publicly apologized to Nigeria’s former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, for his controversial claim that she was no longer married to the late President Muhammadu Buhari before his death.
In a Facebook post, Kperogi admitted that his earlier statement caused unintended pain. He described it as one of the “worst and cruelest lapses of judgement” he had ever made, adding that the backlash had left him in deep personal anguish.
Though, not countering the claim made by his source, whom he called a person of “unimpeachable integrity,” Kperogi acknowledged that the information was never meant to be made public. He admitted that sharing it was a mistake, stating that “Not every well-sourced information is for public consumption.”
In extension, the professor addressed Aisha Buhari’s former aide on Public Affairs, Alhaji Sani Zorro, who strongly denied the divorce claims. Quoting the late MKO Abiola, Kperogi wrote: “No one can give you a haircut in your absence,” conceding that only Aisha Buhari could truly define the status of her marriage.
In his apology, Kperogi emphasized that “the hurt was greater than the truth,” and expressed regret for the distress his post caused. He insisted he had no malicious intent, saying, “I sincerely did not intend to harm Mrs. Buhari or execute any personal vendetta.”
The apology follows earlier claims by Kperogi that Aisha Buhari had reverted to her maiden name and was no longer living with the former president before his death.
Closing his statement, Kperogi offered a heartfelt apology, saying:
“To Mrs. Aisha Buhari, I offer my heartfelt and unreserved apology for the needless and deeply regrettable hurt I have caused. I am truly sorry.”
