Flying Eagles Edge Niger on Penalties to Reach WAFU B U20 Final

Flying Eagles beat Niger Republic on penalties to reach WAFU B U20 Championship final.

Nigeria hopes to defend title after tense goalless match and 4–3 shootout victory.

Nigeria’s U20 men’s football team, the Flying Eagles, have secured a place in the final of the WAFU B U20 Championship after a tense 4–3 penalty shootout win over the Niger Republic on Sunday in Ghana.

The semi-final clash ended goalless after 90 minutes of regulation time, with neither team able to break the deadlock in what was a tight and tactical encounter. Despite Nigeria dominating possession and creating more opportunities, their efforts failed to produce a goal.

In the opening half, the Flying Eagles attempted three shots, none of which were on target, while the Niger Republic failed to register a single attempt. The second half saw Nigeria increase their attacking pressure, but the Nigerien defense remained resolute, often deploying seven players behind the ball to stifle the defending champions.

With no goals at the end of regulation time, the match was decided by penalties. Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt gave his side the early advantage by saving the Niger Republic’s first spot-kick. However, Nigeria’s Tahir Maigana also missed his attempt, keeping the shootout evenly poised.

Ultimately, the Flying Eagles held their composure and converted four penalties, while Niger Republic managed only three, sealing Nigeria’s place in the final with a 4–3 victory.

The Flying Eagles will now prepare to face the winner of the other semi-final clash between tournament hosts Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Nigeria, the defending champions, will aim to retain their WAFU B U20 crown and secure regional dominance as they continue their build-up to the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
