Lagos Court Grants N10m Bail to Activist Scott Iguma in Cybercrime Case

Court grants N10 million bail to Scott Iguma over cybercrime and threat-related charges.

Judge warns both parties to avoid public comments as trial begins October 10 in Lagos.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has granted bail to social activist Scott Iguma in the sum of N10 million. Iguma is currently facing trial over accusations linked to the sharing of a false video and making threats to someone’s life.

The bail ruling was delivered by Justice Friday Oghazi during a court session held on Monday. The application for bail was filed by Iguma’s legal representative, Stanley Alieke. In the motion dated July 17, 2025, the defence appealed to the court to consider bail on the most favorable terms, backed by a sworn affidavit.

The prosecution, represented by A. Nwabuisi, did not object to the bail request. However, the prosecutor asked the court to prevent the defense from posting any information about the complainant on social media. He also requested that both parties avoid making any public remarks about the ongoing case.

In response, Iguma’s lawyer asked that similar restrictions be placed on the complainant. He argued that the complainant should also be banned from discussing the case with the press or through blogs and online platforms.

After considering the arguments, Justice Oghazi approved the bail and set the amount at N10 million. The court also required one surety who must meet certain conditions. The surety must provide legal proof of owning property within the court’s jurisdiction. Alternatively, the person could be a government employee from either the federal or Lagos State civil service, holding a post not lower than Grade Level 12, and must submit evidence of tax payments.

Justice Oghazi further instructed both parties involved in the case not to make public comments or statements while the case is ongoing. He reminded both lawyers to inform their clients about the court’s warning.

The trial has been scheduled to begin on October 10, 2025.

Iguma was first brought before the court on July 17, 2025, on four counts related to circulating false content and issuing threats. These charges are said to violate Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes Act and carry penalties under Section 24(2)(ii) of the amended 2024 version of the law.
