Senate Applauds Tinubu for Earmarking $3bn to Revive Eastern Rail Line

Senate hails Tinubu for allocating $3 billion to rebuild Eastern Rail Line after years of delay.

The project targets key regions, fulfilling a major promise made during his January visit.

The Nigerian Senate has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for setting aside $3 billion for the reconstruction of the Eastern Rail Line, calling it a crucial step toward correcting long-standing infrastructure neglect in the South-East and North-East regions.

The commendation came shortly after the Senate approved the President’s $21 billion foreign loan request on Tuesday. Of the total, $3 billion is dedicated to reviving the Eastern Railway Corridor that runs from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri a long-awaited project championed by regional stakeholders.

Senator Victor Umeh highlighted the project as a milestone, recalling that he had raised the issue during past budget discussions. He also acknowledged Senate President Godswill Akpabio for promising to present the concerns directly to President Tinubu.

“This move to reconstruct the Eastern Rail Line is a breakthrough, especially considering the longstanding appeals from the South-East,” Umeh said. “President Tinubu visited the region in January and promised to look into it. The current funding shows he is making good on that pledge.”

In his remarks, Senate President Akpabio applauded Umeh’s remarks and praised the non-partisan support for national development. “Effective leadership should rise above party lines. This is evidence that our democracy is evolving in the right direction,” he said.
