Senate President Confirms Four PDP Senators Have Joined APC
Four PDP senators have left the party and joined APC during Wednesday’s Senate plenary session.
They blamed party issues for their move, giving APC more power in the upper chamber.
Four senators who were elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have officially left the party to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Their defection was announced on Wednesday during a plenary session led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Akpabio read out their individual letters on the Senate floor, where they each pointed to irreconcilable differences within the PDP as the reason for their decision. He then instructed the Clerk of the Senate to properly record the defections.
The senators who made the switch are Francis Fadahunsi representing Osun East, Oluwole Olubiyi from Osun Central, Aniekan Bassey representing Akwa Ibom North East, and Samson Ekong from Akwa Ibom South.
As a result of this development, the new composition of the 10th Senate shows the APC with a stronger majority, now holding 70 seats. The PDP has 28, Labour Party has 5, while the NNPP, SDP, and APGA each have one seat.
In support of the move, APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, former Minister of Labour Senator Chris Ngige, and some House of Representatives members were present at the chamber during the announcement.
