Ayra Starr Jokes About Being First African to Snap Bathroom Selfie at MET Gala
Ayra Starr says she was the first African to take a bathroom selfie at Met Gala.
She shared the funny moment during a recent chat with Billboard magazine.
Nigerian music star Ayra Starr recently made a playful claim about a viral photo she took at the prestigious Met Gala.

In a chat with Billboard, the “Rush” singer shared the stories behind some of her most talked-about pictures, including one taken in the bathroom during the 2025 Met Gala.
The photo featured herself, American pop star Coco Jones, and Nigerian singer Tems.
Speaking about the image, Ayra jokingly said,
“First African to take a bathroom selfie at the MET Gala, period!”
Even though Tems, who is also African, was in the photo, Ayra playfully claimed the title for herself.
Ayra Starr made her debut appearance at the Met Gala this year, which was held on May 5, 2025, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. She was part of a strong African presence at the global fashion event, joining fellow Nigerian stars Burna Boy, Tems, and South African singer Tyla.
Also representing Africa at the MET Gala red carpet were celebrity Swanky Jerry and author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
