Cholera outbreak kills 13 in Niger State, with over 230 others receiving treatment in six LGAs.

Officials activate isolation centers, public campaigns, and emergency care to stop further disease spread.

A cholera outbreak has claimed the lives of 13 people in Niger State, with 236 others currently receiving treatment across six local government areas.

The outbreak, which was first detected on Sunday in Shiroro Local Government Area, has now spread to five additional LGAs. Local sources report that fatalities have occurred in multiple communities as of Wednesday.

According to a health official who requested anonymity, the worst-affected areas include Chanchaga, Bosso, Shiroro, Magama, Bida, and Munya. The official added that over 239 individuals have been infected and are being treated at various primary healthcare centers.

In response, the state government has established an isolation center at the old wing of the Senator Idris Ibrahim Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre located along Old Airport Road in Minna.

Dr. Ibrahim Dangana, the state’s Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, confirmed the outbreak and said a coordinated, multi-sectoral response has been activated to control the spread.

“We have set up treatment and isolation facilities in each of the affected local government areas to contain the disease,” Dangana said. “An intensive public awareness campaign is also underway, focusing on religious organizations such as CAN and Islamic bodies, as well as the eight emirates within the state.”

He praised Governor Mohammed Bago for his swift response and also acknowledged the support of donor agencies helping the state manage the crisis.

Supporting the commissioner’s remarks, Dr. Ibrahim Idris, Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Tertiary Healthcare, confirmed that Chanchaga, Bosso, and Shiroro remain the hardest-hit local government areas in the current wave of infections.
