INEC Urges Political Parties to Promote Peace Ahead of Jigawa By-Elections

INEC urges political parties to promote peace ahead of Jigawa by-election set for August 16.

REC Professor Lawan says logistics are ongoing but calls for more voter education efforts.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Jigawa State has appealed to political parties to educate their members and supporters on the importance of maintaining peace during the forthcoming by-elections in the state.

The call was made by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Professor Mahammad Lawan, on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the INEC office in Dutse, the state capital.

INEC has scheduled the by-election for the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency to hold on August 16, 2025, following the death of Hon. Isa Dogon Yaro, the constituency’s representative in the House of Representatives, who passed away on May 9, 2024.

Speaking at the meeting, Professor Lawan confirmed that the Commission had already made notable progress in its preparations. “Over 30 per cent of the election logistics have been completed,” he said. He also revealed that the upgrade of the Voter Identification and Verification System (VIVAS) machines has been successfully carried out.

Despite these advancements, the REC noted that voter education and public sensitization still require more attention. He stressed that public awareness is vital for the success of the poll.

Professor Lawan assured stakeholders that all sensitive and non-sensitive election materials would be fully available ahead of the scheduled date. He also called on security agencies and relevant groups to collaborate closely with INEC to ensure a smooth electoral process.

“The success of this by-election depends on joint efforts from INEC, political parties, security personnel, and voters,” Lawan stated.

Participants at the meeting shared their suggestions and committed to supporting INEC’s efforts. They emphasized the need to prevent electoral violence and promote transparency. The stakeholders also commended the Commission for its work so far and pledged their continued cooperation to ensure peaceful and credible elections in Garki/Babura.
