Lagos Doctors Condemn July Salary Cuts, Call It ‘Illegal and Hostile’
Lagos doctors protest July salary cuts, calling the deductions sudden, unfair, and completely unauthorized.
The Medical Guild demands answers, saying the move breaches trust and violates proper negotiation protocols.
The Medical Guild, the umbrella body representing doctors employed by the Lagos State Government, has strongly criticized unexplained deductions in their July 2025 salaries, labeling the move as “clandestine, hostile, and illegal.”
In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by the Guild’s Secretary, Dr. Adekunle Akinade, the doctors said they were taken aback by the pay cuts, which were made without prior notice or explanation from the government.
“The deduction in our July salary has come as a shock. This action has eroded the trust we’ve built with the state government,” Akinade said, adding that the step taken by the government “crossed the red line.”
The Guild claims the deductions stem from a so-called “miscalculation” that the government is now attempting to correct retroactively without consultation or agreement from affected workers.
Dr. Akinade stressed that any such financial adjustments must follow proper procedures and involve transparent discussions with stakeholders. He noted that the officers’ committee had been in good faith, waiting for a formal meeting to review the governor’s prior approval regarding salary matters.
“Instead of the promised dialogue, we are met with sudden deductions. This is a clear breach of trust and established protocol,” he added.
In reaction to the development, the Medical Guild has summoned a Representative Council meeting for Friday to discuss the matter and decide on the next course of action.
“We urge all members to stay calm. The Guild remains committed to defending their welfare and will do everything necessary to address this provocation,” the statement concluded.
The Guild has consistently engaged the Lagos State Government on key welfare issues, including hazard allowances, working conditions, and salary structures.
As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Government has not made any official statement in response to the allegations.
