Team Nigeria Heads to Algeria for Inaugural African School Games
Sixty young athletes leave Abuja for Algeria to represent Nigeria at African School Games.
The team will compete in ten sports as they chase glory and gain global experience.
A team of 60 young student-athletes representing Nigeria departed via Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport today, bound for Algiers, Algeria, to participate in the first-ever African School Games scheduled for July 26 to August 5, 2025.

The contingent, accompanied by their coaches and officials from the National Sports Commission (NSC), will compete in 10 sports: athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, canoeing, football, swimming, table tennis, cycling, and taekwondo.
The multi-sport event, making its debut in Algiers, is expected to bring together hundreds of talented student-athletes from across the continent. It serves as a platform to promote youth sports development, foster cross-cultural interaction, and scout for Africa’s next generation of elite athletes.
According to the NSC, Team Nigeria’s participation reflects the country’s commitment to grassroots sports and its broader goal of nurturing talent through international exposure. Many of the athletes are products of national youth games and school competitions held earlier this year.
Officials at the airport expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances, noting that the team has undergone weeks of preparation and training to compete at the continental level.
“This is a proud moment for Nigeria,” said an NSC representative. “We are confident our young stars will do the country proud. Beyond winning medals, this is also about shaping the future of Nigerian sports.”
The NSC also extended well wishes to the delegation, urging them to uphold discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
The African School Games initiative, backed by the African Union and national sports ministries, is designed to promote unity and inspire excellence among young African athletes.
