Why I Left Banking for Music, Rapper CDQ Shares His Story
CDQ reveals he left banking to chase music, choosing passion over paycheck and family expectations.
The rapper says writing lyrics at work showed him where his true happiness really lived.
Nigerian rapper, Sodiq Abubakar Yusuf, popularly known as CDQ, has revealed his reason for leaving his banking career for a full-time career in music.

In a recent interview with The Echo Room, the Nowo Soke crooner shared that he only went into banking to honor his late father’s wish. However, he never felt truly fulfilled in the job. CDQ revealed that he often found himself writing lyrics during office hours instead of focusing on his banking tasks. That moment made him realize it was time to choose his passion.
He recalled how music producer Masterkraft, who supported him at the time by giving him a place to stay and lending him suits for work, was shocked when he heard CDQ had quit his job.
“I quit my bank job. I couldn’t tell my mother or any family member then. I left the house and went to stay with Masterkraft in the studio. I told him banking isn’t my passion. I will probably just do it to make ends meet. But music is something that whether it gives me a return-back or not, I’m still happy doing it,” he said.
According to CDQ, he encouraged Masterkraft to fully focus on music with him, promising that a breakthrough would come within six months. True to his word, things turned around quickly. Within that period, they landed a deal and moved from the ghetto to a better life in Lekki.
