Xavi Rejected as India Unable to Meet Financial Terms for Coaching Role
Xavi Hernández wanted to coach the Indian national football team.
India turned down the offer, saying his financial demands were too high for their budget.
Barça legend Xavi Hernández expressed interest in managing the Indian National Team as head coach.

However, India’s football authorities declined due to financial constraints, citing that the deal was unaffordable.
Barcelona icon and former head coach Xavi Hernández was reportedly interested in taking charge of the Indian national football team. However, the move fell through as the financial demands of the deal exceeded what the All India Football Federation (AIFF) could afford.
According to sports journalist Marcus Mergulhao, Xavi formally applied for the coaching role, signaling serious intent to transition into international football management. His interest reportedly created a buzz within Indian football circles, given his stature as a UEFA Champions League-winning player and coach of FC Barcelona.
Despite the excitement, the AIFF turned down the opportunity after reviewing the financial terms proposed by Xavi’s camp. Officials deemed the package far beyond their current capacity, even though they acknowledged the prestige and technical expertise the former midfield maestro could bring to the team.
“The deal was simply not feasible,” a senior federation source reportedly said, explaining that Xavi’s financial terms were well above what India typically allocates for national team coaching contracts.
Xavi, who led Barcelona to La Liga and Spanish Super Cup titles in 2023, stepped down earlier this year amid internal challenges. He remains a highly sought-after tactician in the football world, with potential suitors across Europe and beyond.
India, meanwhile, is expected to continue its search for a new head coach within more financially manageable options, possibly looking at candidates with regional or developmental experience rather than global high-profile figures.
