Lagos Govt Urges Doctors to Call Off Strike, Pledges Swift Action on Salary Dispute
Lagos government appeals to striking doctors, promises urgent action on salary deduction issues.
Talks with Medical Guild ongoing as state moves to protect healthcare services during protest.
The Lagos State Government has called on medical doctors in the state’s public service to suspend their three-day warning strike, which began on Monday, July 28, 2025. It assured them that active efforts are underway to address their grievances.
The appeal comes in response to the announcement by the Medical Guild, the professional body representing medical and dental practitioners in Lagos State’s public hospitals, who are protesting alleged “illegal and disrespectful” salary deductions. The warning strike is expected to run until 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 31.
In a statement released by Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, the Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Health, the state government acknowledged the concerns raised by the Medical Guild during its press briefing on Saturday, July 26.
“The Lagos State Government wishes to assure the general public that all grievances of the doctors are currently being looked into with utmost sincerity and urgency,” the statement read, adding that negotiations with the Guild are ongoing.
A Conciliation Committee, already in place before the strike notice, comprises representatives from both the government and the Medical Guild. The committee has been reviewing submitted documents and holding meetings to ensure the resolution process aligns with established fiscal policies and labour practices.
“This is the first such development in recent years,” the Ministry noted, stressing that the government remains committed to maintaining a harmonious relationship with its healthcare workforce while safeguarding the well-being of over 20 million Lagos residents.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has also reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of health workers and the continuous improvement of the state’s healthcare system. His administration has urged the Medical Guild to allow dialogue and mediation to proceed uninterrupted.
In the meantime, the Ministry has activated contingency measures to minimize disruptions in medical services during the strike period. It also thanked residents for their patience and understanding as discussions continue.
