Edo Police have launched a probe into a viral video showing politician Okai Akhani assaulted by vigilantes.
Authorities condemned the act and vowed to hold those responsible accountable, regardless of affiliations.
The Edo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing a politician, Hon. Okai Akhani, being assaulted by individuals alleged to be members of a local vigilante group in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday, July 26, 2025, has triggered widespread outrage and concern across social media platforms.
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Joel Yamu, the police condemned all forms of unlawful assault, cruel treatment, and abuse of power by individuals or groups, regardless of their affiliation.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, has directed a detailed investigation to uncover the circumstances behind the incident, identify the perpetrators, and ensure they are held accountable under the law.
“The Command will not tolerate impunity or any violation of human rights, irrespective of the social or political status of those involved,” the statement said.
While reiterating the importance of community policing and the role of vigilante groups in supporting security efforts, the police emphasized that such roles must be exercised lawfully and with full respect for citizens’ rights.
The public has been urged to remain calm and law-abiding while the investigation is ongoing. The command also assured that further updates will be provided as the inquiry progresses.
