Lagos Government Partners with Siemens for Waste-to-Energy Technology Support

Lagos has partnered with Siemens Group to boost its waste-to-energy drive for cleaner power.

Officials say the project will help reduce landfill pressure and meet rising electricity demand.

The Lagos State Government has announced a strategic partnership with Siemens Group to provide technology support for its growing waste-to-energy initiatives, as part of its push to convert municipal waste into sustainable electricity.

The development was disclosed via the state government’s official X account on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. The collaboration will be overseen by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, according to the statement.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, stated during a meeting with Siemens representatives in Alausa that Lagos currently generates between 13,000 and 14,000 tonnes of solid waste daily. While parts of this waste are already being utilised in various energy and recycling initiatives, Wahab noted that a large portion remains untapped, creating significant opportunity for scalable waste-to-power projects.

He pointed to existing infrastructure like the Epe Power Plant and material recovery facilities in Ikorodu and Badagry as early examples of the state’s commitment to sustainable waste management and renewable energy expansion.

Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, added that the government is actively working to provide an enabling environment for global partners, including Siemens, to participate in Lagos’s growing clean energy ecosystem.

“With Lagos rapidly urbanizing, energy demands are increasing. Waste-to-energy offers a unique opportunity to address both waste management and power shortages in one integrated system,” Ogunleye said.

Representing Siemens Group, Commercial Director Durgen Schumann affirmed the company’s readiness to bring in its global expertise in power systems, energy efficiency, and grid integration to support Lagos’s ambitious waste conversion goals.
