NCDC: Lassa Fever Kills 152 in Nigeria So Far in 2025

Lassa fever has claimed 152 lives in Nigeria so far in 2025, with 811 confirmed cases in 21 states.

NCDC says Ondo, Bauchi, and Edo remain the hardest-hit, as fatality rate rises to 18.7%.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced that 152 people have died from Lassa fever so far in 2025, based on data collected up to Week 28.

This brings the disease’s case fatality rate to 18.7%, a rise from 17.3% recorded during the same period last year.

In its latest situation update, the NCDC revealed that the country has reported 6,520 suspected cases, with 811 confirmed across 21 states and 105 local government areas.

During Week 28, the number of new confirmed cases remained the same as the previous week, with infections newly recorded in Ondo, Edo, and Benue states.

Ondo leads with the highest number of confirmed cases, contributing 32%, followed by Bauchi with 23%, Edo with 17%, Taraba with 14%, and Ebonyi with 3%. These five states account for 89% of the total confirmed cases, while the remaining 11% came from 16 other states.

The most affected age group is 21 to 30 years, with the median age of infected persons reported at 30.

No new infections were reported among healthcare workers in the latest update, and the national multi-sectoral team continues to oversee response activities at all levels across the country.
