A Nigerian lawyer has brought attention to a troubling case that underscores ongoing issues within the nation’s criminal justice system. The case involves Emeka Nzeruike, who was arrested in 2015 at the age of 12 for alleged theft and has spent the past decade in prison without being tried.

Now 22, Emeka has spent nearly half his life behind bars, detained under the status of “awaiting trial.” During those ten years, he received no legal representation, no formal charges in court, and no opportunity to defend himself. His situation remained unknown to the public until a legal team recently stepped in to intervene.
“At just 12 years old, Emeka was locked away alone, scared, and forgotten,” the lawyer said. “He had no trial, no legal help, and no justice. Today, we walked into that courtroom, stood by him, and walked him out. He has his freedom back. Welcome home, Emeka.”
The lawyer confirmed that after years of neglect, legal action has finally led to Emeka’s release. Plans are now being made to support his rehabilitation and help him reintegrate into society after years of wrongful imprisonment.
