Dino Melaye Quits PDP, Blames Party’s Weak Leadership

Dino Melaye quits PDP, says party can no longer solve Nigeria’s political and leadership problems.

His resignation adds to growing defections ahead of the 2027 elections and rising opposition momentum.

Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to effectively confront Nigeria’s growing political and governance challenges.

In a letter addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye stated that his decision was driven by what he described as the party’s diminishing strength and failure to offer credible leadership. He noted that the PDP no longer possesses the capacity to tackle the issues affecting the country.

Melaye, who previously contested the Kogi governorship election under the PDP in 2023, said he reached the decision after deep personal reflection. According to him, remaining in the party would no longer align with his values or convictions about the future of Nigeria.

The resignation letter, dated July 30, 2025, was also shared on Melaye’s verified social media account, where he confirmed his immediate withdrawal from all levels of party participation. He further requested that the resignation be treated as final and comprehensive.

Melaye’s exit adds to the growing list of high-profile PDP members who have left the party in recent weeks, following the emergence of a new opposition alliance. Former Senate President David Mark, media personality Dele Momodu, and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar have all reportedly stepped away from the PDP and aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the adopted platform of the opposition coalition.

Though Melaye’s next political move remains unclear, he is known to have close ties with key figures in the new coalition. The ADC, now led on an interim basis by David Mark, has urged its members to show full commitment to the platform, warning against disloyalty and internal sabotage.

With Melaye’s departure, the PDP continues to face questions about its internal cohesion and ability to present a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections. His resignation reflects a broader wave of discontent among members dissatisfied with the party’s direction and performance in recent years.
