NAPTIP Seeks Public Support to Tackle Human Trafficking in Ogun

NAPTIP has urged stronger public support in tackling human trafficking, especially in Ogun State and beyond.

The call came during a sensitization walk in Abeokuta marking the 2025 World Day Against Trafficking.

The Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Adamu Bello, has called for stronger collaboration especially from the public in the fight against human trafficking in Ogun State and across Nigeria.

Speaking through the Ogun State Commander of NAPTIP, Bosede Jimoh, Bello made the appeal on Friday during a sensitization walk held in Abeokuta to mark the 2025 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

The awareness walk, organized in partnership with the Ogun State Taskforce on Human Trafficking and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development, brought together various stakeholders. These included representatives from the police, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and several non-governmental organizations.

The walk covered major areas in Abeokuta such as Kuto, Isabo, Sapon, Itoku, and Lafenwa markets, with the aim of raising public awareness on the dangers and signs of human trafficking.

Bello noted that this year’s theme, “Human Trafficking Is Organized Crime – End the Exploitation,” underscores the need for society to take urgent action.

“We must all rise to support government efforts to break the chain of traffickers and ensure that offenders are held accountable for their crimes against humanity,” she said.

Highlighting the agency’s activities, Bello disclosed that since NAPTIP began operations in Ogun State in August 2023, over 50 trafficking-related cases have been handled. She added that the agency has already secured three convictions, while seven other cases are currently before the courts, with many more under investigation.

She stressed that Ogun remains one of the high-risk states for human trafficking, judging by the volume of cases received in the past year.
