EFCC Denies Harassment Claims, Says Viral Raid Video Misleading

EFCC has denied allegations of misconduct during a recent raid that drew online backlash.

The agency insists operatives acted lawfully and were responding to calls from concerned residents.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to allegations that its officials harassed residents during a recent operation, denying any wrongdoing.

The clarification came following a viral video that showed a damaged door and suggested that EFCC operatives forcefully entered private homes and mistreated residents during a raid on Friday. The video sparked criticism on social media, with some users accusing the Commission of using excessive force.

In a statement issued on Saturday by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, the agency described the claims as misleading and baseless. According to the Commission, its operatives followed proper procedures and acted within the law while conducting the operation.

The EFCC explained that the raid targeted a specific apartment that had been flagged during an intelligence gathering exercise. However, the occupants reportedly refused to cooperate, even after officers identified themselves and clearly stated their purpose. As a result, one of the doors was forcibly opened to carry out a lawful search. The Commission noted that no one was arrested and no items were recovered from the apartment in question.

Oyewale clarified that the raid was prompted by complaints from residents of the estate who were concerned about the increasing presence of suspected internet fraudsters in the area. He added that many community members supported the EFCC’s intervention and thanked the agency for taking action.

“The Commission finds reports of a viral video of a broken door and harassment of residents in the estate strange and unwarranted,” Oyewale stated. He emphasized that several residents had expressed appreciation for the EFCC’s efforts.

The statement concluded with a reassurance that the Commission remains committed to professionalism and discipline. It also warned that any EFCC staff found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate sanctions.
