LASU Suspends Academic Activities Indefinitely Due to Staff Strike

LASU has ordered hostel students to leave by August 4 due to an ongoing staff strike.

The school also postponed exams and suspended activities while negotiations with unions continue.

The Lagos State University (LASU) has instructed all students living in its hostels to vacate their rooms no later than Sunday, August 4, due to an ongoing staff union strike.

This directive was issued in a statement on Saturday by the university’s Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Coordinator, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile.

According to the statement, the university’s Senate held a virtual meeting where it reviewed the situation following the strike action that began on July 31. The strike involves several unions: the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The university’s Senate was briefed by the Vice-Chancellor and the Senate Chairman, who explained that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) representing the unions had directed their demands toward the Lagos State Government.

The statement noted that LASU management had been actively working to mediate between the unions and the state government. As part of these efforts, a meeting was held on August 1 at the Lagos State Head of Service office in Alausa, Ikeja. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Olabode Agoro, the Head of Service, and included university representatives, union leaders, and officials from relevant ministries.

It was agreed during the meeting that further discussions would take place, with all parties expected to reconvene on August 7.

Following these developments, the Senate resolved to postpone the 2024/2025 second semester examinations, which were originally set to begin on August 4. All other academic activities at LASU have also been suspended until further notice.

The university directed all students staying in hostels across its campuses in Ojo, Ikeja (LASUCOM), Epe, and Badagry to vacate their accommodations by 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 4.

The Senate urged all members of the LASU community, especially students, to stay calm and obey all rules during this period.
