Ohanaeze Faults Tinubu’s Extension of Customs Boss Tenure

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has raised concerns over the tenure extension of Customs boss Bashir Adeniyi.

The group fears the move could hinder succession and regional balance in federal appointments.

The leading Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has voiced its concern over the extension of the tenure of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi. The extension was recently approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement released by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze said the move could affect the career growth of Deputy Comptroller General BU Nwafor, who is the next in line for the top position. Nwafor, an officer from Anambra State, is expected to retire in October 2026.

According to the group, the extension could block her path to becoming the next Comptroller General, despite being qualified and next in rank. Ohanaeze stressed the need for fair representation across all regions in federal appointments and warned that such decisions may weaken the spirit of national inclusion.

The group stated that appointments to key government positions should follow the federal character principle, which is part of the Nigerian Constitution. Ohanaeze appealed to President Tinubu to review the extension in order to promote fairness, unity, and a sense of belonging for all regions.
