NiMet Forecasts Rain, Thunderstorms and Possible Floods Nationwide
NiMet has forecast heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across Nigeria from August 4 to 6, warning of floods.
Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to stay alert, as northern, central, and southern states face risks.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across the country from August 4 to 6, warning of potential flash floods in some areas.
In a weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, the agency said parts of the northern region including Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina should expect morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall on Monday. Similar conditions are forecast for the afternoon and evening, particularly in Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi, where flooding is likely.
For central states, including Benue, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory, light rain is expected in the morning, followed by more widespread rainfall in the afternoon and evening.
Over the southern region, NiMet predicted cloudy skies with light rain likely in states such as Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa. Flooding may occur in parts of Oyo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta during this period.
On Tuesday, the agency forecast thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across northern states like Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Zamfara in the morning, with more storms later in the day.
Central states including FCT, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue should expect light rainfall throughout Tuesday. In the south, NiMet predicted scattered showers throughout the day, especially in Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, with possible flooding in those areas.
By Wednesday, NiMet expects thunderstorms and moderate rain in Taraba and Kaduna in the morning, and in states like Borno, Gombe, Yobe, Kano, and Adamawa later in the day. Light rainfall is also likely across the North-Central region, including Niger, Nasarawa and the FCT.
Southern states will continue to experience cloudy skies and intermittent rain. Areas such as Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Cross River are expected to receive rainfall throughout the day. Flooding may affect parts of Bayelsa.
The agency advised residents in flood-prone areas to be cautious and activate emergency responses where necessary. It also urged people to dress warmly due to cooler nighttime temperatures and to secure loose items that may be displaced by strong winds.
“Disconnect electrical appliances, avoid sheltering under trees, and stay away from power lines during storms,” NiMet warned.
Airline operators are advised to consult airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safe flight planning. The public is encouraged to stay updated via the official website: www.nimet.gov.ng.
