Peter Obi Vows to Serve Only One Term if Elected President, Says “48 Months Is Enough”
Peter Obi has reaffirmed his pledge to serve only one term if elected Nigeria’s president in 2027.
He says four years is enough for focused leadership, citing global figures who made lasting impact.
Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has restated his commitment to serve for only one term of four years if elected President of Nigeria.
Obi made the declaration in a public statement where he referenced global and African leaders who chose to serve briefly but left behind lasting legacies. He cited the examples of Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and South Africa’s Nelson Mandela, all of whom served one term or less but are still remembered for their leadership and impact.
According to Obi, “Longevity in office is not a mark of success; rather, it is purposeful, accountable service, however brief, that defines true statesmanship.”
He said his vow to lead for only four years is not a campaign stunt but a personal commitment to responsible leadership. “My vow is sacrosanct,” he wrote. “If elected, I will not spend a day longer than four years in office.”
Obi acknowledged that many Nigerians are skeptical about political promises because trust in politicians has eroded over time. He responded to critics who dismissed his vow, saying some suggested he should swear by a shrine or undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
“I understand the basis of their skepticism,” he said. “They are judging me by their standards, where political promises are made to be broken. But I have a verifiable track record that speaks louder than speculation.”
Obi pointed to his tenure in Anambra State as evidence of his leadership style, noting that he delivered on promises in education, healthcare, rural infrastructure, and prudent management of public funds. “In my political life, my word is my bond,” he said.
The Labour Party flagbearer added that he believes real change can be achieved within a single term if leaders are focused and prepared. “Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is focused and prepared to make a meaningful difference,” he said.
Obi outlined his top priorities if elected:
- Reforming governance
- Tackling insecurity
- Improving education and healthcare
- Supporting small businesses
- Fighting corruption
- Moving Nigeria from a consumption-based economy to a productive one
“These are not utopian dreams,” he stressed. “They are realistic, actionable goals that are achievable within four years.”
He concluded with a message of hope and renewal, saying, “We must rebuild trust in our country. I have done it before, and I do not intend to betray that trust under any circumstances. A new Nigeria is POssible.”
