Police in Rivers State have arrested seven suspected cultists linked to the killing of lawyer Bright Owhor.

The suspects confessed to the crime, admitted cult ties, and were found with weapons and stolen items.

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of seven suspected cultists in connection with the killing of a Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Bright Owhor.

Owhor was attacked on July 5, 2025, along Market Road in Rumuomasi, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. He died hours later at the hospital from gunshot injuries. At the time, the attackers were described as unidentified gunmen.

In a statement released on Monday, police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko said the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit used intelligence and surveillance to track down the suspects over a 10-day period.

She said the arrested suspects confessed to the murder and to withdrawing money from the late lawyer’s bank account. They also admitted being members of the Deygbam cult group and participating in recent cult clashes in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt.

Among those arrested are a gang leader, a driver, an arms supplier, and a getaway vehicle handler. Items recovered from them include pistols, ammunition, SIM cards, a mini bus, and a Toyota Camry.

Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, praised the officers involved and assured residents of the command’s commitment to public safety and justice.
