Benue State University Alumni Split Over Law Lecturer’s Commissioner Nomination

Governor Hyacinth Alia’s nomination of law lecturer Timothy Yangien as commissioner has drawn mixed reactions from Benue State University alumni.

Some accuse him of student mistreatment, while others defend his character and support the appointment.

The nomination of Associate Professor Timothy Yangien of the Faculty of Law, Benue State University, as a commissioner by Governor Hyacinth Alia has sparked controversy among the institution’s former students, with divided opinions over his suitability for the role.

While one faction of the university’s Law Faculty alumni strongly opposed Yangien’s nomination, accusing him of alleged abuse of office and mistreatment of students during his time as a lecturer, another group has come to his defense, praising his character and professional integrity.

The opposing group has already submitted a petition to the Benue State House of Assembly, raising concerns that Yangien’s elevation to public office would “offer him further opportunity to misuse power.” The petition highlights what it describes as a pattern of “oppression and inhumane treatment” allegedly meted out to students under his supervision.

In response, a counter-petition was submitted by a separate group of alumni, who rejected the allegations and endorsed Yangien’s nomination. They described him as “a man of unimpeachable character” and commended his drive for excellence, academic discipline, and leadership qualities.

As of Tuesday, August 5, 2025, it remains unclear whether Governor Alia will stand by his nominee or if the Benue State House of Assembly will act on the petitions submitted from both sides.
