Tinubu Rewards D’Tigress with National Honors, $100,000 and Homes After Historic AfroBasket Win

Coaches received $50,000, as the government celebrates the team’s record fifth consecutive championship title.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honored Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their remarkable triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, where they clinched a record fifth consecutive title.


In recognition of their achievement, the President awarded each player the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), a monetary reward of $100,000, and a housing allocation. The team’s coaches were also rewarded with $50,000 each in appreciation of their strategic leadership throughout the tournament.
D’Tigress secured their latest title after defeating Mali 78–64 in a dominant final performance, reinforcing their status as the most successful team in the tournament’s recent history.


President Tinubu’s gesture, shared via official posts on X, is seen as a significant morale boost and part of broader efforts to promote excellence in Nigerian sports. It also highlights the government’s renewed commitment to recognizing and investing in female athletes who consistently bring global honor to the country.
The housing allocations and financial incentives are expected further to support the team’s welfare and future performance, as calls for better treatment of national athletes continue across various sports.
