Federal Government Issues Five-Day Flood Alert in 19 States
Heavy rains may cause serious flooding in parts of Nigeria over the next five days.

The Federal Government has issued a warning that several parts of the country may experience flooding over the next five days due to heavy rainfall. According to a forecast released on Tuesday by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment, the risk of flooding will affect 76 locations across 19 states between August 5 and August 9, 2025.
Residents and local authorities in the listed areas have been urged to take immediate precautions to prevent damage to lives and property. The Ministry noted that the rains are expected to be intense enough in some areas to cause overflow and disruption.
States identified in the warning include Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Cross River, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Benue, Kaduna, Katsina, and Kebbi. Others are Kano, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, and Gombe.
Some of the specific locations at risk include Eket, Abakaliki, Gboko, Zaria, Daura, Birnin Kebbi, Kano, Potiskum, Dutse, and Mangu, among others.
The Ministry called on stakeholders to closely monitor the situation, support awareness efforts, and ensure emergency response teams are ready to act where needed.
