Police Deny Reports of Mass Rape at Federal University Lafia
Police dismiss reports of mass rape involving students of Federal University Lafia as entirely false.
Authorities say only robbery occurred, with one isolated rape case confirmed in off-campus student village.
The Nasarawa State Police Command has refuted circulating claims that over 30 female students of the Federal University of Lafia were raped during a recent attack.

Police spokesperson Ramhan Nansel, speaking to journalists on Tuesday, described the allegation as false, stating that investigations had uncovered no evidence to support the report.
“That report is false. Our investigation shows that no such incident occurred. Bandits did not rape over 30 female students as alleged,” Nansel said.
He noted that the police engaged with the university’s Chief Security Officer, information officer, and several students, none of whom confirmed the alleged mass rape.
“We spoke to the Chief Security Officer, the school’s information officer, and even students themselves. All denied knowledge of any such incident. If something of that magnitude truly occurred, students would not remain silent,” he added.
Nansel clarified that the only reported incident occurred on July 27 in the student village area, where a robbery took place. Items including a phone, power bank, and a handbag belonging to a student identified as Jennifer were stolen. A male student was also injured while attempting to flee. No rape case was reported.
“Over 30 students raped? Come on. If something like that had happened, we wouldn’t hide it. It wasn’t our fault,” Nansel stressed.
Reacting on X, a user identified as @deehsarasheed, who claimed to be a student leader at the institution, also dismissed the claim as misleading.
“That report is false and should be condemned,” the user wrote.
According to the post, the robbery happened at the student village, not within the main school hostel, which is known for its round-the-clock security.
The user acknowledged that one rape incident was reported, but emphasized it was an isolated case, not a mass assault as claimed.
“The attack occurred in the student village, not the hostels. Several rooms were robbed. Only one case of rape was reported, and that occurred because the student was found unclothed when the assailants broke in,” the post read.
The student further clarified that the school’s hostels, especially the female blocks, remain secure and have never been breached due to the presence of strong security personnel.
