Bauchi Residents Call for Revival of School Feeding Program to Boost Enrolment
Bauchi residents urge government to revive school feeding program to boost enrolment and classroom learning.
They say the initiative supported education, reduced poverty, and empowered local farmers and food vendors.
Residents of Bauchi State have called on the government to reinstate the homegrown school feeding program, saying it would significantly improve enrolment and learning in public primary schools.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, the residents stressed that the program played a vital role in supporting both education and the local economy.
Mr. Samuel Garba expressed disappointment over the suspension of the initiative, noting that it had revitalized the public school system when it was active. “It was a mistake to halt the program. It gave life to public schools and encouraged attendance,” he said.
Malam Abubakar Isa also highlighted the program’s importance, stating that it helped increase enrolment and improved pupils’ focus in the classroom. “It was more than just a meal. It kept children in school and helped them concentrate better,” he said.
Another resident, Hajiya Zainab Haruna, noted that the initiative had economic benefits for the community. According to her, it created income opportunities for local farmers and food vendors, especially women. “It empowered small businesses and helped reduce poverty,” she added.
She further lamented that the suspension of the program had led to a drop in school attendance, particularly in rural communities.
Also speaking, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed urged federal and state governments to prioritize the program’s return, while ensuring transparent and effective implementation.
He emphasized that reinstating the school feeding scheme would not only improve educational outcomes but also stimulate local economic development.
