Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has delayed plans to officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as speculation grows that former President Goodluck Jonathan may be preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party after prolonged internal disagreements, was expected to collect his ADC membership card in Jada, Adamawa State, on Wednesday, August 6. The event has now been postponed indefinitely.
Adamawa ADC chairman, Shehu Yohana, confirmed the delay, saying Atiku told him the ceremony had been moved to mid-August, with no fixed date yet. He also claimed Atiku was waiting for some All Progressives Congress governors who plan to join the ADC before holding the event.
A senior ADC member, who asked not to be named, suggested the delay may be linked to internal political maneuvering involving Atiku, former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, and Jonathan. The source alleged that Obi’s supporters had gained influence in the ADC’s southern structures, creating challenges for Atiku’s presidential ambitions.
The same source revealed that the ADC had held talks with Jonathan about a possible 2027 run, describing the former president as “a gentleman” who understands the PDP’s internal problems. “We are talking to him, and we are getting a positive response,” the party chieftain said.
Jonathan’s campaign posters have reportedly surfaced online, pairing him with Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso. However, in May, Jonathan’s wife, Patience, publicly stated she had no interest in returning to the presidency and pledged her support for First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in 2027.
Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, dismissed claims that the delay was related to Jonathan’s possible candidacy, insisting the registration process was still ongoing. He stressed that Atiku “will not be threatened by anyone’s ambition” and remains focused on working with other Nigerians to present a strong alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
