NiMet Forecasts Heavy Rains, Flood Risk Across Nigeria
NiMet has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across Nigeria on Monday and Tuesday, warning of flooding risks.
States on high alert include Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Kebbi, Sokoto, Plateau, and Nasarawa.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released its weather forecast for Monday and Tuesday, warning of possible flooding in several states.
In its outlook issued on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet said northern states could experience morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall in Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba. Later in the day, similar weather is expected in Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa. The agency also cautioned that parts of Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto are at high risk of flooding during the period.
For the central region, light rain is expected in parts of Niger State on Monday morning. By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with light rainfall are likely in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and Kogi. NiMet warned of possible flooding in Plateau, Nasarawa, and Niger states.
In the south, cloudy conditions are forecast for Monday morning, with light showers expected in Ebonyi, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Later in the day, moderate rainfall is likely in Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Osun, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom. There is also a high chance of flooding in Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
On Tuesday, morning thunderstorms with moderate rain are anticipated in Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, and Kaduna. By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected in Bauchi, Borno, Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Gombe.
In the central region, light rain is expected in the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, and Kogi during the morning hours.
