Atiku Accuses Tinubu Administration of Using EFCC to Intimidate Opposition
Atiku Abubakar condemns EFCC’s detention of Aminu Tambuwal, alleging it is a politically motivated attack.
He warns such actions erode democracy, urging Nigerians and global bodies to resist one-party dominance.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the detention of former Sokoto State governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing it as a politically driven attempt to weaken opposition forces.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Atiku claimed the move was part of a broader strategy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to harass and intimidate political rivals. He alleged that the anti-graft agency’s operations had been turned into “a political weapon” aimed at compelling opposition figures to defect to the ruling party.
“At the rate we are going, anyone in the opposition is a target for phantom corruption allegations, but once they join the ruling party, their ‘sins’ are forgiven,” Atiku said, warning that such practices not only erode democratic institutions but also promote corruption.
Atiku further alleged that the EFCC was being used to pressure opposition governors and political leaders into switching allegiance, cautioning that these actions could push Nigeria towards a “one-party dictatorship.”
He called on civil society groups, Nigerians, and the international community to resist what he described as anti-democratic manoeuvres.
